Day 34 – Part 2

The Liard River, upstream from the hot springs.

We are now in Dawson Creek in a lovely motel with decent wifi so I will continue yesterday’s tale before starting on today.

From Watson Lake we continued on to Liard Hot Springs, the big ticket item of the day and one we were all looking forward to. The hot springs were initially developed by the army engineers in 1942 who built a walkway over the marsh and the initial pool.

The 10 minute walk into the pool is all on raised wooden pathway with marsh both sides and autumn colours getting under way.

The springs are well set up with changing rooms and toilets. The temperature at the top of the pool is in the high 40’s to low 30’s at the bottom. There are underwater seats and benches to help relax and soak the cares away.

An hour goes by very quickly here. It was very peaceful with not to many people. It was then time for a quick lunch and on the road again.

Lunchtime visitor.

About 5 km down the road we came across a herd of bison grazing beside the road. There would have been about 30 of these beautiful animals, but we stayed in the car in case any became too cranky.

From there we had a very scenic drive past Muncho Lake and through the mountains and valleys at the top of the Rockies. This part really was a special drive.

We spotted a young elk on the side of the road. She had a tracking collar and ear tag so I guess she is being monitored. The elk are a very beautiful animal that looks quite fragile but I am sure they are tough.

The scenery opened out to awesome wide vistas before becoming flat and rather mundane after our previous experience.

Finally made it into Fort William and found Dan’s Pub with a good feed. Tomorrow a shorter day to Dawson Creek.
