Castello di Soave

We are sitting in a camping site in the town of Soave, gazing up at the castle while enjoying a cold drink. It’s 9 pm and still 28C and muggy.

We left Venice about 10 am after some maintenance. It’s only 100 km to Verona, 1.5 hours on the toll way or 3 hours by the scenic route. We were told of an old villa trail that was picturesque so we tried that. There were certainly a lot of villas ranging from derelict to mansions. After a few dead ends and reversing out of narrow lanes we gave up and headed to the Villa Pisani Museum.

A villa deliberately run down and all other buildings destroyed just to avoid paying land tax.

Some of the beautiful countryside we went through. Much of the 3 hours was spent negotiating about 100 roundabouts.

The villa dates back to 1720 and was built for the Pisani family who ruled this area of Italy. In due course it was a headquarters for the House of Habsburg and later a ruler of Italy. Currently there is an exhibition of wearable are throughout the palace.

Now that’s a bath.

Pool and Fountain being restored. There are major restoration works going on here. I would hate to see the bill.

On the way to Soave we came across an Ikea so had to stop to compare the Italian version. I can report that everything is exactly the same except for the great pizza in the canteen.

Castle Soave is a very large complex comprising a walled city. The castle dates back to the 10th C.

Tomorrow we explore Verona.
