Spain & Portugal – Gibraltar Day 1

Our first view of The Rock. It was much bigger than we expected.

Our camp site in Seville was at the river Marins. Quite beautiful in the morning sun.

It was a leisurely 200 km drive to Gibraltar. There are no camp sites in Gibraltar so you have to stay on the Spanish side. The best town is La Linda de la Concepcion where our camp ground isa an easy 6 km taxi ride to the border. We decided on an afternoon reconnoitre of Gibraltar town and see what is on offer.

It is the weirdest thing to enter a country by walking across an international runway but that’s how to get to Gibraltar

Gibraltar has a long and troubled history and has been occupied to try to control the entrance to the Mediterranean since the 1300’s.

One of mane restaurants offering fish and chips. Obviously we weren’t the only ones with a craving. Ended up having a very fine battered Haddock with chips and salad. Craving satisfied its back to Tapas.

Gibraltar is nothing of what we expected. We expected a quaint, tight knit, English military outpost. What we found was a busy tourist oriented city with hardly an English accent to be heard, mostly Spanish or original Gibraltan, and the British Pound rules.

They even have the Tardis.

British and Gibraltar flags fly together. A recent referendum voted 99% to stay British rather than become Spanish.

About to cross the runway.

We had a hold up. A British Airways jet was wanting to take off so we had to wait.

The RAF could do with an upgrade. Tomorrow more Gibraltar.
