Day 33 – Beaver Creek to Teslin

Autumn has started to turn the colours already.

We left Buckshot Betty’s at Beaver Creek about 8 am after a very peaceful night and a decent if not massively healthy breakfast. Another big driving day but some things to do in Whitehorse on the way.

Our cabins at Beaver Creek. Very comfortable and self contained.

The first 300 km was back over past covered ground, the last part beside Kluane National Park. Nothing new to show you there but in the 3 weeks since we last passed this way autumn had come quickly and the leaves have started to change.

Fireweed, bottom photo 3 weeks ago. Top photo now where it has started to turn red and blanket the landscape with a red carpet.

The mountains and broad expanses still fascinate, specially now with a few autumn colours.

The Canyon Creek bridge was built in 1903 for the gold rush days. It was re built by the army engineers in 1942 exactly as originally built.

Whitehorse is the capital of Yukon and is a busy and vibrant city. We had some chores like obtaining Canadian currency and organising SIM cards and checking out the one and only quilt shop.

It is a town that requires some considerable time to enjoy. However not in winter as it gets down to -40C.

Roll Bunnings in with Supercheap Auto and you get Canadian Tire plus gun shop. It’s boys toys heaven.

Some downtown Whitehorse

The mighty Yukon river flows through Whitehorse at great speed. The Yukon used to be a great trading river.

We left Whitehorse about 5 pm and headed to our accommodation for the night at Teslin, an hour and half away. Teslin is on the Alaskan Highway but doesn’t make much of an impression. With some trepidation we checked into the Trading Post Motel but found it clean and comfortable.

We had purchased the makings for dinner in Whitehorse and needed to do some washing. We combined both dinner and washing at the RV park across the road.

Alfresco dining again. The wine is a Merlot from Canada. I am trying to drink local where possible. May have to move back to California. Tomorrow another big driving day heading for the Rockies.
