Day 44 – Wedding Photos and Calgary

It was a wonderful and most enjoyable wedding which went on way past our bedtime. I think what made it most enjoyable was the fantastic group of friends that have come from all parts of the globe to be with Erin and Jon on their special day.

The boys, a bit nervous.

Alan and Erin. You could not find a prouder dad.

They are a delightful couple.

Stunning location

It was a bit noisy. Young Daniel came well prepared.

So as a result of all the festivities we slept in somewhat this morning before making the 350 km trip to Calgary.

On the way we stopped off at Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump which sounds awful. It turned out to be a fascinating visit to a site where Indian tribes would gather in the summer, watch the buffalo fatten on the ritch grass, then drive them over a cliff for food for winter. This area is a significant archeological site now.

The name derives from a legend which says a boy wanted to watch the buffalo fall over the cliff so he hid under the cliff in a recess. Unfortunately for him it was a bumper year for buffalo and they piled so high the boy was crushed. Hence the name.

One of the cliffs used over 6000 years to collect buffalo.

The drive to Calgary is over wide open plains that apparently stretch all the way to the east coast.

The autumn colours have finally started in Canada.

We reached Calgary in the afternoon and pulled into our B&B way out in the suburbs which suits us fine as mostly all we need is space to repack for France.

Calgary back yards.

This brings to an end our Canada / Alaska adventure. Since leaving Vancouver on 28 July we have travelled 2,746 km by ferry and 9,773 km by car.

It has been an awesome trip and certainly one of the best road trips we have ever done. And it has been wonderful to end the adventure with a delightful wedding, without which we wouldn’t have done the road trip anyway. So thank you Erin and Jon.

I hope you have enjoyed following us via this blog as much as I have enjoyed sharing it with you.

On Tuesday we fly to Frankfurt, pick up some cars and drive to France for the big quilt conference for the girls and wine conference for the boys. The three couples then split up and Collette and I head to Poland.

I will take a break from the blog for a few days then resume for the rest of our trip from France. Please continue to follow us if you are interested. Until France, au revoir.

  1. Thanks David for the wonderful coverage of such a stunning trip. Your photos are superb. Look forward to the resumption. We fly home from Norway tomorrow after our six weeks cycle tour, so I will need something to read!
