Day 14 & 15 – Hannover and Home

When it comes to picking camping spots this one could hardly be better.

Yesterday we left Poznan late after a final farewell to Laura then set of to Hannover for 6 hours of autobahn mayhem, endless trucks and traffic jams. There wasn’t much to blog about last night. We set up camp, had dinner and went to bed.

Today we explored Hannover. The Kingdom of Hannover was part of and administered by The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, from 1814 to 1837, whose monarch at the time was George III. Subsequently there is a lot of George in Hannover.

Moonlight over our campsite.

Busy, tree covered streets, at least at this time of year but not for long.

The latest Tesla X.

Bikeways rule in Hannover. All of Germany actually.

Hannover is a 500,000 strong, modern city with a lot of history. The tourist office has developed a red line walk to guide tourists around all the highlights. We didn’t do it all but what we did was interesting.

The Opera House

The finance district.

Aegidienkirche – Lest We Forget. Built in 1347 this Gothic hall church was destroyed in an air raid in 1943. Only the walls and tower remained. It has been left unrestored as a reminder of the horrors of war and a memorial to those who died.

The statue inside the church is titled ‘Humility’. A peace bell was presented by sister city Hiroshima and tolls 4 times per day, 5 minutes after the hour so no other bells interfere.

The New Town Hall was built from 1901 to 1913 and stand on 6026 beech piles.

The archer, representing the ‘right to be different’, is pointing directly at the mayor’s office.

One of the main displays in the New Town Hall shows the city of Hannover at various times in history.

Lunch was recommended at a local brewery and we weren’t disappointed.

2 lt jug to take home.

Another church in the centre of town was also badly bombed. It has been restored with a more modern look.

This beautiful facade is now a shopping centre.

This memorial remembers all the Hannover Jews that died in concentration camps.

Tomorrow we drive to Frankfurt for the final pack before leaving Friday morning. We have 36 hours in Vancouver then home Monday morning.

So this is the final chapter of our North America and Europe Adventure. Thank you to all our faithful followers. Thanks must go to our fellow adventurers without whom it wouldn’t have been as much fun. Thank you also to our son, Tom, who set up the blog and hosted on his web site. I hope you have enjoyed our blog and hope you join us next time we venture forth. It won’t be long.

    1. Hi Elspeth
Great to hear from you and to hear you have been following us. It was a hell of an adventure but we are glad to be home at last. Arrived a few hours ago and now trying to stay awake to beat the jet lag.
We will be buying a caravan here this month so maybe our cycling adventures will be delayed a bit. Still looking at those Thorn bikes though. Hope to be in England next year sometime so would love to catch up.
      Best regards
      David
