Tasmania -Day 14

Presbyterian Church, Ross, Tasmania

We had a few days off from our joint travels. Linda and Alan rode Maria Island while Collette and I stayed in Hobart to attend to some business matters.

We met today on the way to Launceston in the town of Ross, a very well preserved convict town that has maintained most of its original buildings. It was an important stopping point on the highway between Hobart and Launceston and is the site of a convict women’s prison called ‘the factory’.

At the main crossroads in Ross, a memorial to all soldiers that features a Boer War gun.

The women’s convict jail is now mostly destroyed but the overseer and history still remain.

I was starting to think the snake stories inn Tasmania were a myth. Maybe not.

The town is full of beautiful and lovingly cared for buildings from the 1800’s which makes Ross such a special place.

Finally we made it to Launceston and a campsite on the banks of a river and a rail line but what can you expect for $10 per night.

Tomorrow we explore Launceston.
