Day 5 – Freiburg and Alsace

What is it about France and house colours. This would look stupid in Queensland but so right in France.

Another cracker day, warm and sunny. The girls left early to get in as much as possible on the last day. The boys gradually got their act together and left an hour later.

I first visited Freiburg in Germany 35 years ago and loved the town. I have wanted to go back for another look for many years and today the boys obliged my wishes and we set off for the 68 km easy drive.

Until we hit roadworks diversions. Roads were closed and the GPS got confused. We eventually arrived and drove around for a park. Sunday and everyone, it seemed, was in town. So we paid for parking and walked to Cathedral Square. The 11th C gothic cathedral, called Freiburg Minster, was the main subject of my photographic desire.

Sunday and church was in so no visitors allowed. Lunch was then the priority and Cathedral Square is surrounded by them. We were serenaded by a very good busker playing Vivaldi on the violin and Ravel on the flute.

Our busker and the square.

After lunch we went for a walk in search of a canal and craftsmen that I remember from so long ago but to no avail.

Some more Freiburg.

By the time we made it back to the Cathedral the service was over so we managed a peek inside and a few photos.

It is a magnificent piece of gothic architecture and every bit as beautiful as I remember.

After Freiburg we headed back to France to continue on the Vines Trail and back to Kayserberg. Le Markstein looked interesting. It was a very energetic drive up the side of a mountain to a ski resort.

In summer it seems also to be a favourite road of motorbikes as we encountered hundreds negotiating the corners at breakneck speeds. The French were also out in huge numbers enjoying the sunshine.

Great views except for the haze.

In summer it turns into a reasonably gentle kids ride.

We had an excellent dinner together for our last time in Europe as a group.

Tomorrow I am taking Nicky and Peter to Frankfurt airport and then meeting Collette, Linda and Alan in Stuttgart so big driving day.
