The Old Square, Central Prague

Another day exploring Prague, taking in the sights and visiting some highlights. We started with a walk over the Charles Bridge which was started in 1357. It is now a pedestrian bridge only, cobblestones, with statues and towers adorning the span. It has a long tradition of artists and buskers.

Before the bridge we found this monument dedicated to the 2500 Czech Airforce pilots who made their way to England to fight the Germans. Quite an amazing story we hear nothing about.

Next was a visit to the Old Town Hall which included a tour up the clock tower, through the building and into the dungeons. This was a fascinating tour, much more than we expected.

Views from the clock tower. The balcony around the tower was open so would not suggest it in winter. Big bonus though is the tower has a much needed lift.

Into the dungeons about 4 metres under current ground level. This is a huge maze of rooms which was originally street level and was gradually built up due to the river flooding. It was later used as a prison for the most un savoury characters.

We then visited the Museum of Communism which details the 40 years of communist rule. Again a fascinating presentation although most of it was just text and not at all photogenic.

Another day of exploring Prague tomorrow, however rain is forecast so will see what we can do. Till then…
