Spain & Portugal – Zumaia and Rain

The Zumaia Flysch.

Today the aim was to reach Bilbao but via the much longer and much more picturesque coast route, taking in towns like Zumaia which we had heard a lot about. As we pulled out of camp the rain came. I shouldn’t complain as it’s the first rain in the 5 weeks we have been in Europe.

As expected the views were all potential and not much substance. Cloud was mostly down to sea level and no point even trying for a photo.

Kayak school.

The amount of motorhomes in Spain at the moment is mind boggling but the locals seem to be expecting us. There are dedicated motorhome parking lots in most towns, usually reasonably convenient to town. Zumaia was no different and we parked in our designated spot along the river.

As we set out, umbrellas in hand, the rain mostly eased so I could get a few photos on the walk into town.

Slipyard

Zumaia old town.

Another very pretty town.

San Pedro parish church.

Walled courtyard at the top of the steps with much needed seats.

Quietly beautiful.

This street leads to the beach. An easy 5 minute walk we were told. 20 minutes later, wet and muddy, we got there.

Joxe Mari Zubia Zigaran (Mari). 1809 – 1866. Fisherman and tug boat operator, well known for multiple sea rescues. He died on his last rescue attempt.

Dairy producer has a vending machine for milk and yoghurt.

Bloke we met on the path.

Yhe Fishermans’ Well. Notice the tin mug attached to the inside wall.

The area is renown for these rock formations called a Flysch. They are certainly impressive.

Another horrible attempt at a scenic photo.

We moved on further up the coast hoping the mist and rain would clear but no such luck. So took the shortcut to Bilbao and just as well as we snagged the last camp site. We are sitting high on a hill overlooking Bilbao but mist and rain means we can’t see much. Cross fingers for a better day tomorrow.
